To my sixteen-year-old self

It won’t be easy
I whisper
vocal nodes sore
from internal howling
no fences around
the solar system of your imagination

It will take time
I bellow from the mountain ridge
extract the reticence from your voice
like spaniel teeth to hare
incisive yet soft
do no harm

I sing to remind you where you came from
carry you to the attic of your heart
just a girl, a box of tunes and an entire summer

these days, to-do lists override summer
          hold me hostage
          tone in its bullet points

This poem
words held gently like ladybugs
until they take flight
into your daydreams

I thirst for comfort
You turn out okay
